The Eureka Lemon, with its glossy green leaves and fragrant creamy-white blossoms, is probably the most commonly grown lemon tree in the backyard. It produces medium to large, yellow, juicy, coarse skinned-fruit all year round with the main crop typically being in summer. The 'Eureka' is a small spreading tree with few thorns bearing fruit that has a clean bitter taste, and a high juice and acid content. Its appeal lies in its superior tangy juice, while the pulp and rind are just as sort after for cooking, baking, and cleaning around the house. The juice and zest can be used to flavour both sweet and savoury dishes, or added to hot or cold drinks.

Grow it as a feature tree in Mediterranean style gardens or an ornamental on courtyards or decks in a large pot. It’s suitable for coastal areas. The plant likes a sunny, open position in well-drained soil, although it needs to be protected from strong winds especially during flowering or while fruit is forming.

Planting Advice

Plant in a sunny, open position in well-drained soil. Dig a hole twice as wide and as deep as the root-ball. Take out the plant from the container and place the plant into the hole so that the soil level is the same as the surrounding ground. Fill in the hole firmly and water it well even if the soil is moist. To keep the tree free of grass and weeds, and to retain moisture, remember to mulch well but keep mulch away from the tree trunk to avoid collar rot.

Watering needs

Water regularly during warmer months, when buds appear, it starts flowering or when fruit is forming. Water container specimens every three to four days, and more often in hot weather. Do not water the trunk.

Pruning Advice

Prune in late spring with pruning shears to shape the tree and to remove any dying, low hanging branches or leaves from the tree. Take off any suckers at the base of the trunk and on branches to encourage new growth.
