Spring Gardening Idea #1: Start a veggie patch
This is one of the most popular and rewarding gardening ideas for spring. There’s a huge number of vegetables (including tomatoes, beans and cucumbers) to plant now and harvest later in the year. The traditional way is to dig a vegetable garden in the soil, but if you are short of space or time, why not take advantage of ready-to-plant mobile beds such as Vegepods? They make vegetable growing stress-free, accessible and possible in courtyards and on balconies too. Simply fill your Vegepod with potting mix, compost and perlite as detailed here and add your favourite vegetable seedlings. Check out Flower Power's range of raised garden beds here.
Spring Gardening Idea #2: Grow a hedge
Hedges look good and bring privacy and shelter, but getting started can be a puzzle. Don’t be overwhelmed: divide the project into three easy steps and get going.
- Step 1 To get started, clear a planting area where you want the hedge to grow, digging in compost and well-rotted manure to improve the soil. Lay an irrigation line or soaker hose - there are plenty of irrigation options available at Flower Power. Measure the length of the space for the hedge and the desired height; then head to Flower Power to choose some hedge plants.
- Step 2 Select from a great range of evergreen hedging plants including Buxus japonica, Murraya paniculata, Gardenia augusta ‘Florida’, Viburnum odoratissimum, Photinia ‘Red Robin’, Camellia sasanqua and others, selecting a plant that appeals that also forms the height that’s needed. Hedges look great and are easiest to maintain if planted with a single variety. Work out the number of plants needed for the length of the hedge. As a tip, most hedge plants are best spaced around 1m apart with a plant at either end of the row. To speed up growth, buy semi-advanced plants - for example, in 190mm pots. - Step 3 Dig evenly-spaced planting holes. Make the holes deep enough to comfortably accommodate the root ball. Ensure the hedge is straight (use a stringline if necessary). If you've installed a watering system, you should also check that each plant receives water. Once planted, water in well, apply liquid fertiliser and continue regularly through spring and summer as your hedge establishes. Surround the new hedge with organic mulch (Flower Power recommends Martins Organic Sugar Cane Mulch) to keep down weed growth. For ongoing care, lightly trim sides and top to encourage bushy growth.
Spring Gardening Idea #3: Underplant feature pots
Spark up existing potted plants by adding instant colour from flowering annuals and some cascading plants to soften the look of the container. Flowering annuals add a splash of colour, while a spiller plant that tumbles over the edge of the pot such as a Dichondra ‘Silver Falls’ draws the eye in a different direction. When selecting plants to pot up together, make sure they'll cope well with the same growing conditions and care.
Spring Gardening Idea #4: Give garden beds an edge
Garden edging unifies the garden, looks smart and reduces maintenance. Select from the huge range of modern garden edging products available at Flower Power. There are flexible and modular options that allow the home gardener to create angular or curved shapes in a size and style that suits your garden. Spring Gardening Idea #5: Revive your potted plants
