Choosing the best turf for your lawn and garden
The quickest and easiest way to turn dirt into lawn is to cover it with a roll of turf. Laying turf is the garden equivalent to putting down carpet in the house. Lawns also help keep outdoor areas cool and make a pleasant surface for children, pets and entertaining outdoors - but it's important to choose the best turf to suit your unique garden.
There are many different types of lawn grasses available as turf. If you are patching an existing area, match the turf variety with what’s there already. When starting from scratch, consider what you want from a lawn to help work out which turf is best for you. Each roll of turf covers one square metre and cost varies depending on the variety selected.
Flower Power's Best Turf Varieties
Here are turf varieties stocked at Flower Power nurseries with their benefits to help you choose which is the best match for your garden.
Buffalo Lawn Turf
Buffalo is a broadleaf grass that forms a green and easy-to-maintain lawn. It is the most popular choice for Sydney's climate. Older types of Buffalo were coarser in texture than the modern ‘soft’ Buffalo varieties stocked by Flower Power, which have a softer feel and are more comfortable to sit or play on. This fast-growing, dense grass doesn’t invade garden beds and, once established, has good and heat drought tolerance. It grows well in coastal areas. Its deep green colour is maintained throughout the year, although it can develop a purple tinge in cold winter areas. Modern Buffalo varieties have high shade tolerance making them well-suited to areas that are overshadowed for part of the day (tolerates up to 70 per cent shade).

Couch Lawn Turf
A popular choice, Couch is a fine-bladed grass for a hard-wearing lawn in all situations. Couch lawns tolerate warm conditions and do well in seaside locations. The finest varieties, which include Santa Ana, Greenlees and Wintergreen, respond to good care, regular watering and mowing to present an immaculate, high-quality show lawn. Fine-leaf varieties need full sun and don’t thrive in shade, however Common and TifTuf have better shade tolerance, and tolerate higher levels of wear including that of children and pets. TifTuf, in particular, is a hybrid couch variety with a much denser leaf which is great for high traffic areas.

It will stay green during winter and its dense growth helps reduce weed problems. Zoysia grass is incredibly slow-growing and super soft underfoot.

Kikuyu Lawn Turf
Kikuyu is fast-growing and hard-wearing, making it the ideal choice for a low cost, low-maintenance family lawn or sports lawn. With a high drought tolerance it may brown off during a hot dry summer without regular watering, but will regreen immediately after rain. A deep lawn edging is recommended to contain the lawn in a garden situation as kikuyu produces vigorous runners. Runners can be used to patch bare areas.
