How to plant and grow camellias in Sydney
Camellias are among the best of all evergreen flowering shrubs for Sydney gardens. There are many species and named cultivars to grow for flowers from late summer to spring. As well, they tolerate shade to full sun and grow in the ground or in containers. No matter which camellia you are growing, they need similar care.
How to plant camellias
Growing a thriving plant starts with good planting. Camellias can be planted throughout the year, but the best planting times are autumn to spring when conditions are cool. Select a position in the garden that’s sheltered from hot afternoon sun. Sasanqua camellias tolerate part shade to full sun, while Japonica camellias and other varieties grow best with shade to part shade. All camellias grow well in slightly acidic soil (pH 6 or below). In alkaline conditions, grow camellias in containers.
Plants are available in small pots or as advanced plants, so if planting in a garden bed, dig a generous planting hole to easily fit the size of the root ball. It should be wider but not deeper than the root ball. Position the plant so its trunk is at the same depth in the soil as it was in the potting mix. Burying the root ball too deeply can affect growth. Back-fill around the root ball using garden soil. Water in well and continue to water regularly. Spread a fine layer (around 5cm deep) of organic mulch (Flower Power recommends sugar cane) and well-composted cow manure or garden compost over the soil to conserve soil moisture and deter weed growth.
Watering after planting with a plant tonic such as a seaweed solution helps the plant establish in its new home. Water with seaweed solution at planting and then fortnightly until the plant is well established.
In a container, select a pot that comfortably holds the rootball. Use a good-quality acidic potting mix such as Supersoil Professional Gardenia, Camellia & Azalea Potting & Planting Mix. Make sure the container has drainage holes in its base. If possible, elevate the container on pot feet or bricks to assist with drainage.
How to care for camellias
Camellias can be fertilised in late summer (before flowering but as buds are forming) and in spring (ahead of new growth) with a complete slow-release fertiliser, or use a specialist camellia food such as Neutrog Kahoona for Camellias, Gardenias, Rhododendrons, Azaleas & Other Acid-Loving Plants. Plants in containers can be fed through the growing season with a liquid plant food (Flower Power recommends Miracle-Gro Azalea, Camellia & Rhododendron Water Soluble Plant Food) or small doses of slow-release fertiliser.
Once well-established, all camellias are drought-tolerant - however, they grow and flower best with regular watering, especially during extended dry periods and in later summer as buds form. Water once or twice a week depending on weather conditions. Plants that are growing under the eaves or in a dry location need more frequent watering. Plants in containers may need daily watering. Always check that the water is soaking in around the root ball. If there are any issues with watering, apply a soil wetting agent that helps water soak into the soil or potting mix (follow the directions on the container).
Camellias can be pruned lightly to shape or can be under pruned (that is have lower branches remove). It is also possible to use camellias as hedges or topiary specimens.
