Colourful and distinctive, kangaroo paws must be among the most recognised and rewarding native plants to grow. Vibrant flowers perch on long stems adding colour to the garden and attracting birds. They also make excellent cut flowers.
These iconic plants deserve a high five for their amazing tolerance to harsh conditions. Native to Western Australia, kangaroo paw are accustomed to very dry summers and moist, cool winters. They tolerate very hot temperatures over 40ºC and down to 0ºC and are salt tolerant. This means that high humidity and frost can cause them some stress, so keep an eye out for root or crown rot during humid weather. Kangaroo Paw will grow happily without fertiliser, however they respond spectacularly to regular feeding.
Some varieties of kangaroo paw like Bush Pearl and Bush Pizzazz flower all year round. Taller kangaroo paw are extremely hardy and push energy into a shorter but dazzling flush of flowers usually from mid-spring through to summer and early autumn.
With a wide variety of furry colours like pinks, reds, yellows and green and short to tall sizes to choose from, we're here to help you choose the kangaroo paw that's just right for your garden.
