If anyone knows how best to care for cut flowers, it's Joe from Taren Point's The Flower Guys. After recently winning the Outstanding Florist Award in the 2015 Sutherland Shire Local Business Awards, we caught up with Joe to pick up some tips on extending the life of cut flowers.

Joe's top 5 tips on extending the life of your cut flowers

  1. Cut off 1cm to 2cm from the base of your flower stems and remove any lower foliage that will be underwater in the vase. This will reduce rotting and the spread of bacteria and allow your flowers to continue to drink water and last longer. Cutting the stems at a 45 degree angle will increase the surface area for water to be absorbed.
  2. Use a clean vase to avoid bacteria infecting the flowers and add flower food to the vase water to provide energy and nutrients.
  3. Top up water regularly and replace the water at least once a week. If stems are rotting at the base cut them again when changing the water.
  4. Remove any faded flower and dried foliage.
  5. Keep flowers in a cool place and out of direct light and other objects that generate heat that can wither flowers.
