Water features: perfect for any outdoor space

Carefully chosen water features provide two main benefits. First, the aesthetic of water is always soothing – whether it’s sunlight glinting off it or the moon reflected in it, it’s a sight for sore eyes at all times of the day. Second, the sound of gently tumbling water is extremely relaxing, evoking feelings of bubbling brooks and gentle rivers.

Some people choose to install a water feature outside their bedroom windows for this reason. The sound of gently moving water is a pleasant one to go to sleep to, and it can help to mask the sound of traffic or other noises while you sleep.

How to make a water feature

  • Bury a paddling pool in your garden to create a pond and plant water lilies or grasses.
  • Use a waterfall style water feature to add interest and depth to a plain external wall.
  • Create a pond and populate it with fish! Don’t forget to place a net over the top to stop birds stealing your new garden residents.
  • “Plant” a smaller, jet style fountain amongst plants or in a garden bed or half wine barrel planter as a surprise addition to the plantings. This has the added benefit of keeping your garden well watered – just make sure you’ve got good drainage.
  • Choose a statement fountain and place it in a corner where you don’t already have a lot of competing features. Perhaps use it in between two different plantings as a link, or in an area you have an expanse of same-same greenery.
  • Pop a bird bath in a quiet corner and encourage songbirds to come and play in your garden.

How to install a pumped water feature

Any pumped water feature has several different elements to consider: the installation of a pump, an adequate water reservoir (the place where water is stored and drawn from), an electricity supply and maybe even a filtration system that will need to be cleared out regularly.

Get a qualified electrician to fit a safe, waterproof power supply near the fountain that has an easily accessible on and off switch. You should also have a protective device that will cut off the power automatically if there’s a problem with the pump. All our water fountains contain internal reservoirs to conceal both the pump and the reservoir, for sleek looks and easy access.

How to clean a water feature

Cleaning garden fountains or other water features isn’t necessarily high on the list of things you love to do in your garden, but if you do it regularly it doesn’t need to be that hard. Here’s how to clean a water feature:

Even with water flowing through it constantly, there will be a build-up of dirt, debris and algae, clogging your system and making garden fountains look less than their best. A good clean every couple of months – less often for larger fountains, more for smaller fountains because they have less water to dilute algae – will keep your water feature looking and running its best.

To clean the fountain itself, turn it off and take out anything loose, such as stones, and clean them individually to make sure you’re not just going to put dirt and algae back into your system.

Remove the pump and empty the fountain of all water. Use a kitchen sponge to scrub the inside of the fountain with your preferred cleaning solution. Once you’ve gotten rid of all the gunk, give it a good rinse with fresh water so you don’t get bubbles when you turn the fountain back on.

You can clean the pump mechanism in a sink easily by removing the backing to see the interior workings. Use a toothbrush (that you don’t plan to use again) to gently scrub away grime, running it under water to flush it clean.

Put it back together and replace it in your clean fountain, along with all the stones and extras you removed, then refill with water and turn it on again. If you like, you can add a product to the water to reduce algal growth, though avoid this if you have fish or plants living in the water. Easy!

How to clean garden statues

Garden statues and bird baths will, over time, acquire a layer of dirt, moss and general grime, which can seem like a huge effort to get rid of. How to clean garden statues is, for the most part, a simple task.

Just take a bucket of hot water and add dish soap. Dunk a kitchen sponge into the hot, bubbly water and start scrubbing. For corners and crevices that are a little harder to reach, use the toothbrush you used to clean your water fountain.

Give your garden statue a good rinse with the hose or a bucket of clean water, then do a second round with the soapy water if necessary, followed by more clean water.
