How often to water indoor plants

If you're wondering how often to water indoor plants, the answer is: it depends! There are many factors to take into consideration and you may find that all of your house plants have different watering requirements.

What to consider when watering your house plants:

  • What type of plant? Each species has different requirements; some will need watering almost daily while others will be happy with once or twice a month. Our horticulturalists will be able to advise you on the right schedule for your plants.
  • How warm your house is, and also where in the house your plant is. In a warm, sunny house underneath a big window, a plant is going to need much more watering than in a corner of a cool house.
  • What season it is. Watering needs change between winter and summer. Just as you get thirstier in hot weather, so do your plants.
  • How much air is moving through your house. If your house has good air circulation, your plant will dry out faster.
  • If you have a top dressing. Moss or stones or hessian on top of the soil will keep it moist for longer.
  • The size and type of the pot. Smaller pots will dry out faster, and clay pots dry faster than plastic pots.
  • The soil mix. If your soil has more volcanic rock in it, it will drain and dry out faster.

Your plant will probably tell you when it needs more water if it starts to droop or turn brown. As a general rule, keep the soil slightly moist but never soggy.

How to care for indoor plants

  • As above, make sure you're giving them the right amount of water. That may mean increasing the humidity of the room if you live in a very dry place.
  • Choose a location that works best for them. Some plants like direct sunlight a few hours a day, some prefer filtered light and some grow just fine with minimal light. Also make sure they are not sitting in a wind tunnel or somewhere they will get knocked by people or pets.
  • Don’t move them around too much. Plants don’t like having to reacclimatise themselves often as it stresses them out.
  • Keep them in pots with good drainage and in potting mix that has the right nutrients for how to care for indoor plants.
  • Feed your house plant with a balanced fertiliser that contains nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Indoor flowering plants like fertiliser that is high in potassium, while foliage plants need more nitrogen. Our expert horticulturalists will advise you on the right fertiliser for your plants.

How to pot indoor plants

Repotting your house plants gives them more room to grow and gives them fresh soil with more nutrients to feed them. Here is how to pot indoor plants:

  • Water your plant thoroughly a few days before repotting.
  • Gently remove the plant from its pot. You may be able to just grasp firmly at the roots and pull, but you may have to turn the pot upside down, or run a knife around the inside of the pot to loosen the roots.
  • If re-using the same pot, dump out old soil and brush loosely to clean.
  • If you're using a new pot, choose one no more than 5cm larger in diameter than the old one. Too much space slows growth.
  • Preferably choose a pot with good drainage, but if it does not have a hole, add pebbles in the bottom to let water drain.
  • Add a few centimetres of fresh potting mix to the base and carefully lower your plant in. Fill in all space with fresh potting mix and tamp down gently so it is firm. Water lightly.
