A nutritious perennial herb with stout, fleshy edible stalks in a brilliant ruby red. The large leaves are beautiful but shouldn’t be eaten as they contain high concentrations of oxalic acid which is poisonous. Plant in a sunny position or semi-shade. Rhubarb can be grown in the ground or in a container and tolerates cool climates.
Can be stewed for desserts. Used in pies, crumbles, fools and jams. Rhubarb pairs very well with orange.
- Growing tip: For best results plant 90 centimetres apart.
