The Tarocco Rosso Blood Orange is a newer variety of the blood orange. A brilliant small, bushy, evergreen shrub with glossy green leaves that produces fragrant creamy-white flowers followed by a small to medium-sized round, juicy fruit with a rich, dark-red pigmented flesh and a sweet taste that has few seeds. The characteristic colour is best developed in cooler inland areas where it can achieve its unique internal fruit colour from dramatic temperature fluctuations, that is hot dry days and cold nights. Blood oranges have an unusual flavour compared to other oranges being distinctly strawberry-like with hints of a citrus tang. The skin can be tougher and harder to peel than that of other oranges. Perfect for desserts, juicing, preserves or on its own as a healthy snack. Ideal for planting in Mediterranean style gardens or as an ornamental in pots for decks or terraces.

Planting Advice

Plant in a sunny, open position in well-drained soil. Dig a hole twice as wide and as deep as the root-ball. Take out the plant from the container and place the plant into the hole so that the soil level is the same as the surrounding ground. Fill in the hole firmly and water it well even if the soil is moist. To keep the tree free of grass and weeds, and to retain moisture, remember to mulch well but keep mulch away from the tree trunk to avoid collar rot.

Watering needs

Water regularly during warmer months, when buds appear, it starts flowering or when fruit is forming. Water container specimens every three to four days, and more often in hot weather. Do not water the trunk.

Pruning Advice

Prune in late spring with pruning shears to shape the tree and to remove any dying, low hanging branches or leaves from the tree. Take off any suckers at the base of the trunk and on branches to encourage new growth.
