Chives a close relation to onion, garlic, leeks and scallions are one of the “fines herbes” of French cuisine. The most delicate member of the onion family which provides flavouring to salads, soups, omelettes, vegetables and cheese dishes. It's easy to grow in the garden, pot or a window box along a window sill. The leaves are best cut close to the ground, preferably before flowers start to form. The lovely lavender flowers that do appear in summer are also edible and make a colourful garnish to any dish.
