This is an interesting and diverse plant that can be grown for its lush foliage or for its tasty fruit and is very tolerable to most growing environments, being normally found in coastal regions. Coccoloba uvifera has large, round, leathery leaves and typically grows as a shrub or small tree, so works well as a hedge or filler plant. It produces bunches of small, tough, green fruit that resemble grapes, which mature into a deep purple colour when ripe, and are used to make jams. It is a hardy plant that tolerates most soil types and is low maintenance. When growing for their fruit you will need to have two plants for cross pollination purposes.
