Best BBQ to buy

The best BBQ to buy is entirely dependent on your situation, but there are a few things to consider when considering the best BBQ to buy for you:

What size BBQ you need is largely defined by the size of your outdoor entertaining area, but it’s also worth considering how many people you'll generally be barbecuing for.

Portable BBQs are great if you’ve only got a small space or you like to take your BBQ on the road. Small BBQs are larger and more permanent than a travel barbecue, but still small enough to suit balconies if that’s your outdoor space and move around easily. You can usually cook for four people on one of these easily, and many of them come with features such as a hood or a chargrill plate. Large BBQs take up a lot of your outdoor space, cost more and are more difficult to clean. However, if you like to grill for large groups of people at a time (if you have a big family, for example), this may be the way to go. Larger BBQs are more likely to come with all the bells and whistles and Weber Q accessories, including side tables, storage cupboards, hoods, solid burners etc.

What type of BBQ do you want?

BBQs come in three fuel types: gas, electric and charcoal.

Gas is the most common BBQ fuel in Australia. It creates instant heat and lets you easily adjust the temperature. If you can plumb your BBQ to your natural gas source, it’s likely to work out cheaper, otherwise you’ll be using the LPG bottles that you can pick up at your nearest hardware store or petrol station.

Infra-red BBQs are a newer style that run on gas but heat up an infra-red element that cooks food more efficiently.

Electric BBQs need a power outlet close by, but they are usually compact and portable because you’re not plumbed or toting gas bottles. These are a good option for powered campsites or covered balconies and patios. They often have non-stick hotplates, which are easy to clean.

Charcoal takes a bit of practice to get used to, but the food will have a wonderful smokey flavour to it. It can take up to an hour to get the charcoal to a good temperature, so this requires a bit of patience, and you’ll need to use it in an open air space with good ventilation. They can be more expensive to run as you’ll need to buy charcoal for it.

What features do I need to look for when buying a Weber BBQ?

For the most versatility, look for a BBQ with a half-grill, half-hotplate surface. Most larger BBQs offer this, much smaller ones may not. Cast iron is the most popular surface, but if you live in a coastal area, stainless steel is less likely to rust. The same goes for the exterior – high-quality stainless steel is the most durable choice.

The hood should open wide enough to give you access to all the cooking area and should never slam shut at a gust of wind. A double-layer hood will reduce the risk of you burning yourself on it when closed.

Large side trays are a useful feature to place food and utensils on. The fat tray should be easy to access, clean and replace, and it should be large enough to catch all the fat and drips. Models with two wheels are fine as long as it’s not too heavy for you to lift the other end, but four wheels with locks will be much easier to move. Look for Weber BBQ accessories you like too, to complete your BBQ experience.

Best BBQ to buy for an apartment

Check the strata laws to see what restrictions there are for using a BBQ on your balcony. Gas BBQs are more likely to be forbidden for safety reasons, but if you’re allowed, make sure you only ever use a BBQ in an open, well-ventilated space and only store one gas bottle at a time. An electric BBQ is probably a better option for a balcony.

What’s the best BBQ smoker?

There are four major types of smokers: charcoal smoker, electric smoker, pellet smoker, gas smoker. So what’s the best BBQ smoker for you?

Charcoal smokers are the most traditional type. It takes time and experience to learn to use a charcoal smokers, and beginners might struggle at first. But it creates an authentic BBQ taste you’ll love.

Electric smokers are quick, convenient and easy to use for beginners, but they do lose some of the smokey flavour

Pellet smokers use wood pellets as their fuel source, and you can find different flavours of pellets. Most now come with a temperature monitor, so flavour is consistent and pre-heating is fast.

Gas smokers are easy to use and good for beginners, plus they’re not expensive. Again, they lose the smokey taste somewhat, but they come in a variety of sizes so fit any lifestyle.

Best way to clean a BBQ

It’s best to clean your BBQ while it’s still warm. Give it a quick scrape with a non-scratch scrubber, then place a stainless steel bowl of water in the BBQ, turn the heat down super low and close the hood while you’re eating – this creates steam that makes it easier to clean.

Don’t scrub the hotplate completely – the accumulated oils will “season” the plate and protect it from rust. Scrape food scrap and excess oil from the hotplate, and give it a quick wipe with a paper towel. If the drip tray is super dirty, remove it and replace the foil.
